Shifting Center

2026

Shifting Center transforms my personal rituals of counting, checking, memorizing, and seeking balance into a participatory sculptural environment. Emerging from my experiences of hypervigilance and anticipation, the work explores how repetitive actions offer temporary reassurance while creating further conditions to monitor and adjust.

Resembling a jungle gym, its modular metal framework holds woven hog casing, suspended objects, transparent pockets, and rule-based activities. Visitors throw a ball toward an image of anxiety, engage with counting and memorization tasks, and seek a center with a suspended plumb bob. Written sentences accumulate in transparent pockets, while photographs of the archiving process return to the same system, creating an archive that documents its own construction.

These arrangements exist between order and instability. Organic membranes stretch and dry, suspended objects shift, and visitors interpret instructions in ways I cannot fully anticipate. Through participation, private strategies for managing uncertainty become shared physical experiences.

Each configuration forms a complete sculptural environment while remaining open to additions and rearrangements. Shifting Center asks how security takes shape through the continuous effort of maintaining, adjusting, and negotiating our relationships with materials, other people, and the surrounding world.
